I’m not sure I remember exactly when I first heard this song. My friend recommended the band Alt-J to me some time ago and they have several songs that kind of scratch the same itch for me: pretty music and creepy, possessive lyrics.
I think this is probably something that autoplay cued up because I have other songs from the same album on other playlists
This song, Every Other Freckle, manages to be both a little dark, a little silly and maybe even a little spiritual in its vibe. Several phrases connect the idea of literal consumption with sexual obsession, but while a song like Breezeblocks by Alt-J has a lot of the typical “I want you so bad, no one else can have you” vibes to it. This song is more like “I love you so much I want to become part of you.” The song toggles between images of the singer licking, savoring, consuming and claiming some imaginary subject to images of the singer himself being consumed so to become the subject’s very self.
I like how the song expresses dominance (or in this case possession) through submission. We would normally think of being consumed as the ultimate weakness—the captured prey. But here being consumed is an opportunity to invade and to possess on the most deep level possible.
The chorus of “Oh, devour me.” ends with the caveat “if you really think that you can stomach me.”
Ha! Up for debate which set of Reversal characters this might best apply to. But it certainly seemed appropriate for a series that features vampires.
